In case ya been “buzy” ( like Tokka ) and in case you missed it all — we’ve been slammed with toy news this month between Austin’s MondoCon & NYCC ’15.

The cool kids at Toyark have us covered on the imperative bits from NYC ::

Here’s a quick look at some shots we caught of MONDOCon ’15 & the Toy display of Mondo’s new Classic Comic 1/6 scale TURTLES figures.

The display was slightly different than the past summers SDCC ’15 Mondo booth with the Comic Casey mask and Mouser figures absent, but a new UTROM figure popped up with a T.C.R.I. canister. One would wonder if this is one of Mondo’s exclusive accessories for one of the next Turtle offerings.

Thank you for your patience the past few months, things have gotten very busy and in some regards very complicated and even good for Tokka. Thanks to HERO for filling in the gaps here while i’ve been swamped with issues n’ work.

“NINJA TURTLES” Movie :: SHREDDER { tOKKustom MOVIE MANIAC } (( 2014 ))

–>> Neither movie accurate nor inaccurate;Varner Studio’s 2014 MOVIE shredder represents earlier ILM designs for Saki’s armor. One of the more talked about elements of the new film, thankfully this Shredder would reflect ‘somewhat’ more traditional incarnations of the character – if not an amalgam of many earlier incarnations.

Like VARNER’s Foot Soldier in the line, the final look of the manufactured figure may not represent the final look of the characters depicted onscreen, however with some effort and modification ( and imagination ) one CAN amazing things with these toys to better reflect the images in the actual film.

Presented here is a Shredder not entirely accurate to the film, but perhaps a blend of those earlier designs Varner Studios worked off off for the villain and a color scheme & wash similar to the effect of the final version of the Samurai inspired armor. Along with some original elements Tokka added to enhance the toy.

The studded cape of the figure is not present in the live-action portions of the film. However the illustrated / animated intro during Splinter’s voice-over features Shredder flanked by some armed Foot Soldiers. That image DOES feature a studded cape on Saki. From a certain point of view: the figure in reality emulates the early concept work for Saki, Eric Sacks mentions in the movie “upgrades” to the armor Shredder dons in the live-action. Retconning these facts in the movie, the figure hypothetically could be featuring an earlier version of Shredder’s armor PRE- the upgrades made by Eric Sacks and his crew.

Tokka’s presentation also gives a nod to a late great movie-inspired toy-line of the late 1990s & early aughts.

“NINJA TURTLES” Movie :: FOOT SOLDIER { tOKKustom PARAMILITARY wash } (( 2014 ))

–>> The “NINJA TURTLES” title on the cards reflects early design and production by Playmates before “TEENAGE MUTANT” was added back to the title of the reboot film. Cards and promo material had already been produced or were already moving forward in production by the time name change was made so i presume it was kind of too late to go back and change the first wave releases. That may change on cards in future releases later this year/ next year.

I believe this has happened to Playmates before, for example when they had the Peter Jackson “KING KONG” license. KING KONG related products and toys had “KONG : THE 8th WONDER OF THE WORLD” labeling, toys that rolled out at this time i think represented an earlier title to that film. Until just simply “KING KONG” became the film’s title. The early design and production by the toy companies had already had “8th WONDER – ” labels and cards. Playmates was not the only company effected by this. Tho’ i doubt the Film title changing issues really go into effecting the parallel product line’s sales. Other factors on the other hand do tho’.

I’m finding that the the basic Movie Foot is pretty creepy so i ‘ll have one AS-IS.. it’s doubtful that the FOOT are wearing translucent masks in the film. They might, but amoung the first real villains we were able to sneak-a-peek at fully last year was the standard “PARAMILITARY” – like Foot Soldiers. I tried to make one as movie accurate as i could, and it really wasn’t that hard and didn’t take too long. This is just what i did, you can do whatever you want or nothing at all, of coarse.

Using metallic silver, Krylon Fusion “hammered-look” COPPER spray paint for plastics ( on mask ), and some various washes and minor paint on his scarf & metallics on the boots – i think i did okay. The survival knife and firearms have just a metallic wash over them and weapons & figure are coated in a simple sealant even a glue-like substance like Modge Podge rubbed on the figure will work. That final step is not 100 % necessary, but if he’s gonna be handled allot for play and display, i do suggest it.

Since the Foot seem to be going all G.I.Joe in this movie, expanding the Soldier’s arsenal was just an obvious & easy option. For his cannon, battering ram, shield and bullhorn i easily customized/metalized the “stolen” weapons from one of the cheap DOLLAR TREE “MILITARY ACTION FIGURES” available in the toy isle of most of those stores. The weapons aren’t perfect, but add a fun display option. The one displayed on the right is the toy i cobbled these weapons from. The frogman looks like he has some cool weapons to RAVAGE as in the future !!

..maybe i did Ok ?! Or maybe the Foot looks more like DESTRO from G.I. Joe, or Michael Myers from HALLOWEEN. H’m.. you tell me.

..More movie product is being released in more and more stores as you may have seen by now. Wal-marts are getting these pretty hefty palettes with tons of Movie figs: basic, DLX and large scale, april, and Raphael in Disguise. You will also find the newest of the standard Cartoon waves & re-releases in these palette displays ( i.e. Rahzar, Newtralizer, Slash, Dojo Splinter, and Cockroach T. reissue ).

The Outhousers like to speculate that our Big,Bald mystery guy ( pic floating around the web past few weeks ) is Oroku Saki himself in the latest movie trailer. Tokka still thinks an UTROM-like creature ( ala IDW KRANG is afoot around here somewheres, maybe i’m wrong). Maybe Fichtner’s character really is a Red-herring !!

LEGO LEAKS :: Overseas’s Polybagged FLASHBACK SHREDDER ..not the cheapest LEGO mini-fig exclusive, but not the most expensive either.

It’s unclear if Tokka will obtain a set of these to keep on card, or extras for replacement figures & customs.

That may not happen tho’ considering the 12.99 price point, in some regards that may be a slightly higher price point than the 2009 reissues. I recall those clocking in at about 10.99 a few years back.

Apparently for now these reissues are a TRU exclusive offering, the 2013 reissues seem to offer subtle variations than older releases like the 2009 reissues.

The ‘RETRO’ packaging looks great and is even better executed than the 2009 wave. Splinter’s kimono is of a slightly more ‘flocked’ fabric than the prior reissues and vintage versions.

The foot peg holes in the bottom of the new reissue Splinter here has large ones like the more modern TMNT figs of the past 10 + years so they should fit some modern vehicles, playsets & stands but will present challenges if you are looking for compatibility with more vintage offerings like the classic Sewer playset.

I’ve yet to see any of the Teens or Shredder in this 2013 reissue wave, but i presume the foot peg holes on the bottom of those are large as well. 2013 Viacom Copyright information on these figures have been updated as well to distinguish them from the older releases.

Minor paint applications are slightly different than the vintage releases, but not too different than the 2009 release. For some reason his weapons on this reissue seem ‘studier’ but maybe it’s just me.

By the time i got to TRU this was the last reissue they had so i snatched it. His box got damaged so in part out of curiosity i cracked him open.

This line will prolly be for completists & mega-fans, people that missed out on TMNT toys back in the day or the reissues from a few years ago, or for kids who want a taste of the vintage line their moms & dads played with.

However in some regards at nearly 13 bucks a piece, these are pricier than the regular Nick Turtles line based on the current show. And in some cases these may be more pricier than some actual vintage figures out there of the main cast of TMNT from 3rd party dealers.You may as well get the loose, vintage equivalent figure if you just want one of those for display in your collection or to play with.

Obvious & interesting extensions of this “CLASSIC” line is the reissue AGAIN of the ‘TMNT Party Wagon’ & the reissue AGAIN of the oddball 2003 ‘MECH-WRECKERS’ vehicles for Retro Raph and Leo. Each of those nearing the $50 – 60 price mark. If money’s not an issue and you want/ need all this stuff – by all means go for it.

If not, wait out it for a few months – and hopefully prices will stabilize. If you are perfectly satisfied with your current collection of vintage figures, definitely pass on all this stuff and save some money.
