Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird Gobbledygook #1 Cover Original Art (Mirage Studios, 1984). Gobbledygook is famous for its scarcity, and significant for heralding the arrival of the most successful independent comics creators and characters of the 1980s. The issue was the first publication of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s Mirage Studios (see a copy of the rare comic as well as issue #2 offered elsewhere in this catalog).
As the accompanying letter documents, the art was purchased from the creators by our consignor Paul Wagner in 1985, to be used in a fanzine that alas never saw print.
The character shown here is Fugitoid, making his first appearance. The man trapped in a robot’s body starred in this issue and became a supporting character in the “Turtles” universe. He has even enjoyed merchandising success of his own, having been made into an action figure.
The 2007 sale of the complete original art from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 for a reported $250,000 underscores the tremendous interest in Eastman and Laird’s earliest work.
The art is rendered in marker on vellum and mounted to heavy illustration board, with an image area of 7.75″ x 8″. The lot also includes a red marker on vellum overlay by the artists (done for the planned fanzine publication), used to indicate tone for the printer. Also included with this lot is Kevin Eastman’s cover letter to Paul Wagner. The overlay image has been merged with the marker art to show how Eastman and Laird intended this to look. It’s being published here online for the first time.
