Tales of the TMNT Review #60

Greetings all!

Today I present to you a review of our upcoming issue of Tales of the TMNT, #60 “Nobody Does it Better”

The first thing I gratefully mention is the Recap at the start of the issue. This was a big reminder of how tightly intertwined the people and events are throughout the Mirage comic’s universe – Whether the events happened fourteen issues ago or fourteen years ago. The Frontispiece, by Michael Dooney, gives us a few questions to ponder about existence and one’s purpose in life. Very nicely done, writing-wise and artistically.

As always, if you want to avoid anything spoiling in nature, just skip the next four paragraphs.

Our story opens in the early hours of morning, going back and forth between a government bunker in Nevada and the rooftop of a pizzaria in New York City.

In Nevada, The military is checking in on an old alien ambassador after a fourteen year coma. The alien is awakening, and top brass is preparing for  any possible threat. Things get chaotic, and something get shot out of the alien and into the atmosphere.

With Raphael and Casey, only a few days have past since April’s departure for some seriously needed soul searching. Casey is trying to drown his sorrows away, leaving Raph to put up with his rapidly deteriorating temper.

Nobody appears, much to their surprise. It turns out he was the projectile shot out of the Alien. Armed with new abilities, he also has a new purpose – to protect the ambassador at all costs. The guys end up getting a taste of what Nobody’s new life will involve, and the issue ends with them parting ways. For now.

Okay, you’re safe now…

In all, I did enjoy reading this issue. Given the amount of background information needed to understand the story, this would seem more appropriate as a regular TMNT issue. For a regular joe to pick this comic up in a store and glance through it, there’s a lot to swallow in one sitting.

With this new situation of the Alien Ambassador and the new alien threat, we’re bound to see Nobody again in the near future. Nobody’s character is an interesting one. As a simple disguised cop-turned-vigilante, he probably could never have predicted his new purpose in life being that of a protector of an intergalactic diplomat. Who could really look at their life now and say for certain what it would be in ten, twenty years?

As for the Artwork… While I’ve always been a fan of B&W, this issue proved to be a bit difficult to understand some pictures. I think it would actually be easier to comprehend if it was colored, like the cover. Which, oddly enough, has Raph shown as a normal turtle. Why this is, I do not know.

As always, Jim’s use of texture and lighting help to bring an image off the page, whether it’s a sandblown army hummer or the scaly, dinosaurid body of Raphael. Raphael’s current state is one of the things I really enjoyed about the issue. I don’t see TMNT as much as I should, but this look of Raph’s reminds me of Jim’s Paleo: Tales of the Cretaceous comic. If you get a chance, be sure to check out Jim Lawson’s blog. He’s always posting great artwork, both TMNT and Non-TMNT – He’s in our list of links, stop in and say hi…

Overall, it’s a three out of five stars. Not a bad read at all…

1) Please tell us a little about yourself.

WHOOO AM I????!!! ….. I have no idea….Ok I’ll try to make this brief. I was born Nov. 30th on the first snow of winter 1985. My parents were kinda hippy type people, we lived off and on in a converted school bus in my early years which still sits in a small grove on a friends property where it acts as a summer cottage.

Until around the age of grade 7 (what ever that is) I was ‘home schooled’…. YES… I am one of ‘those’ creepy home-schooled kids. Growing up I spent a lot of time working with and learning from my father who was a general contractor and a wonderful teacher of the practical aspects of the world around me. I developed an intense interest in movies and cameras very early in life, which turned into a post secondary education and career in the field. And Yes! the first TMNT movie was a massive player in that passion development. Along with the greats like Terminator 1 and Blade runner! As well as working in in film I work construction with my dad, work on and re-build old Toyota Land Cruisers, fix cars, play bass in a band, play drums for myself, manufacture large camera cranes and rigs, and so on.

Most of you know me now as the guy doing the Turtle Doc, some of you I have even met! This project is yet another one of my crazy projects that go WAY beyond where I imagined they would go, which is always cool! You can see some of the other stuff I do on my sites www.iproductionsonline.com and the movie I shot at www.lifeofcharlie.com …. Oh and of course www.turtledoc.com

Otherwise I am just a crazy, free thinking, loud mouthed, opinionated, happy go lucky, Canadian, living a modest little life in a small city outside Toronto with my girl friend Robyn. Come up and hang out in Canada anytime! if your not afraid of slightly socialist people hahaha!

2) How long have you been collecting TMNT and what prompted you to start?

Well I come from a family of crazy collectors so it comes as totally natural. My first TMNT toys were pre-five birthday and then I got a bunch more on that birthday and the rest Is history.

I would say I have only been seriously collecting since 2007. I have always been collecting movie toys of all types but it wasn’t until then that I decided to focus on one thing I could collect a lot of!!

3) What specifically do you collect (toys, comics, etc.) and how large is your collection?

Well I am a big time toy guy! I am also a completionist by nature so I like to have complete lines with all accessories and such. That said I am also realistic so at this point I am focusing on complete loose figures and dabbling in carded or boxed. My comic collection has grown substantially since the start of the Doc project, but not complete yet.

4) What is your favorite piece in your collection and why?

Hmmmm…. Good question. Probably some of my rare’rer er… comics and variants.

5) How do you store/display your collection at home?

HA This is a great question…. Well I live in a vary small apartment, but I am sort of a freak about nicely displayed and very well taken care of collections. (You will see the best of which in the world in the Doc… but it’s not mine). So I only have a small selected amount out on display at the moment. There is a larger variety of loose figures displayed on the upper walls of my storage closet, but otherwise everything is very carefully stored.

6) What are your top five most wanted TMNT collectibles?

I have a good chunk of very rare and nice pieces so otherwise it would have to be the completion of my toy collection, movie props or suits (which with my anal nature I fully intend and demand proper preservation and storage of these props, people don’t get it! Latex disintegrates in air and light… believe me I have seen full turtle suits in states that would make you cry, so if you have these PROTECT THEM! Don’t ‘love them’)…. Cough…. Ok That was a nice brackets rant.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Rating: 3/5

The first entry in the Turtles series features a respectable 1080p/VC-1 transfer that, despite several technical issues, should please fans looking to disregard their aging VHS and DVD copies of the film. Colors are a bit muted and nighttime sequences are plagued with inconsistent contrast and poorly resolved blacks, but I doubt Warner could have done much more with the original print without investing in a Blade Runner-esque restoration. Thankfully, detail is impressive (particularly when it comes to Jim Henson’s creature costumes), dirt and scratches have been significantly reduced, and noise has been kept to a minimum. On the flipside, the film’s grainfield (while present) has been quashed, and heavy-handed artificial sharpening has been applied to counteract the effects. More distressingly, artifacting, banding, and aliasing pop up from time to time, undermining the overall integrity of the image. Even so, I didn’t expect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to look quite this good. I imagine anyone approaching this release with reasonable expectations will be satisfied with Warner’s efforts.

There has been some discussion among fans about the crappy cardboard packaging, but fear not a member of their message forum has come to our rescue.

Final Words on the set: While hardcore turtles’ fans have probably already placed their pre-orders, frugal Blu-ray adopters will face a more difficult choice. Not only is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Collection a bit pricey, its live-action entries are saddled with problematic video transfers and its supplemental package is a joke. Moreover, the set itself will continue to be a source of contention for many; it may have been designed to look like a cheap pizza box, but… well, it looks like a cheap pizza box. Not exactly the sort of thing collectors will be eager to display on their shelves. Still, any TMNT fanatic (especially those with a printer who’ve downloaded our own madridista8700’s impressive custom covers) will find their expectations have been surpassed. Weigh your options carefully, but proceed with confidence. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Collection is a solid release worth some consideration.
